Save the date! WWN, Wisconsin NOW, and Madison NOW celebrate Women’s Equality Day!

July 8, 2010

Save the date!

Why? Celebrate The 90th Anniversary of Woman Suffrage. Exactly 90 years after the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote on August 26, 1920, the Madison Chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW), Wisconsin NOW, and the Wisconsin Women’s Network (WWN) will be gathering here in the capital of the very first state to ratify it – Wisconsin.

Who? Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk will present a proclamation in honor of the Anniversary. Other speakers will include State Rep. Terese Berceau (76th District), feminist scholar and NOW member Elizabeth Galewski, WWN Vice Chair Ronnie Hess and Penny Sharp, Co-chair of the DPW Women’s Caucus.   Eve Galanter, WWN Chair, will serve as the evening’s emcee.  Local and statewide candidates for public office have been invited and will be recognized.

When? 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2010. A brief program will begin at 6:15 p.m.

Where? The party will take place at a stellar venue of historical significance. The Woman’s Building, where suffrage activities by prominent local women took place, was built by Madison’s Woman’s Club in 1907. The building not only has been historically preserved, but is also home to a popular restaurant – Samba Brazilian Grill (The Woman’s Building, 240 W. Gilman Street).

Admission is free. Free appetizers (vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian) and cake will be available. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Free child care is also available upon request until August 15, 2010.

Current and prospective members as well as supporters of both organizations are invited to attend this free event. All are welcome.

Can’t join us on the 26th? You can still celebrate Women’s Equality Day by making a donation to support the year-round work of the Wisconsin Women’s Network.  Honor the women who fought for the right to vote and who still struggle for equality with your donation today!
