2012 Mother’s Day Drive: What Would Your Mother Say?
May 2, 2012
What Would Your Mother Say?
For many of us, this question has been a lifelong measure of right and wrong: “What would my mother say?” Respect others and treat them fairly. Be honest and kind. Take care of your family and work hard. Our mothers were often the first to instill us with these important values.
Mother’s Day is a time to honor the incredible impact that mothers have on their families and our communities. It is also a day to acknowledge the often unsung contributions of all the important women in our lives.
It is unfortunate that in Wisconsin this Mother’s Day we must wonder whether the lessons of generations of mothers have been forgotten.
What would your mother say when in 2012 the majority of women age 65 years and older struggle to afford basic expenses like medicine, housing, food and transportation?
What would your mother say when in 2012 Wisconsin’s working women, an increasing number of whom are the sole breadwinners for their families, still earn just 78 cents on the dollar to their male peers?
What would your mother say when in 2012 the state repealed the Wisconsin Equal Pay Enforcement Act, which allowed women to sue for punitive damages when they suffered workplace discrimination?
What would your mother say when in 2012 the state repealed the Healthy Youth Act, which gave Wisconsin’s children age-appropriate, comprehensive information to avoid unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and abusive relationships?
What would your mother say when these were just a few examples of the many challenges facing Wisconsin’s women and girls?
This Mother’s Day consider a donation to support the work of the Wisconsin Women’s Network to advance the status of women and girls in Wisconsin. Your generous donation helps us raise public awareness of the critical issues facing all Wisconsin women in 2012 and supports programs such as the Elder Economic Security Initiative, the Wisconsin Women’s Policy Institute, communications like our eBulletin, Facebook page and Twitter feed, and events such as our “Women on Topic” Brown Bag Series, our Women’s Equality Day Celebration and Artful Women, among many other initiatives.
